Since moving the forums to SF, I have started cleaning up spam, removing obviously fake user accounts and generally implementing some spam and user control policies. One thing I have done was a complete resync of user post counts, which lowered many users and took quite a few to 0 posts. Apparently PhpBB has a bug that when posts are purged, the post count for the associated user is not decreased.

In this process, many users are now at 0 posts, and quite a few of them are from 2003-2004. Barring any objections, (PM RACooper about it) I will be purging ALL 0-post users at the end of this week. Yes, we're already down to less than 600, and this purge will probably take it closer to 300.

If these new measures work, I may be able to open the board back to full posting (by registered users). I can see from logs that a lot of the spammer registrations are already being blocked, or at least complicated, so hopefully continued vigilance and technology measures will help keep this forum clean.

PS: one thing that is still not working is sending out registration confirmation, topic tracking and PM notification email messages. This is a SourceForge issue, and I am working on a solution. in the meantime, I will turn OFF the user confirmation email options on the forum until I get this fixed....

EDIT: I've got the email working again (at least for registrations...someone want to send me a PM to test?). There could be a delay up to 30 minutes due to the way SourceForge requires project websites to send email (via SQL and a cron job).

Well, mail is not working again...but it's a SourceForge problem this time. The shell server (which does the mail processing) is offline for "unscheduled maintenance" and will be back online "as quickly as possible" (that's since 12 Feb 2007 and last updated 15 Feb at 07:45 PST). Oh, well....

Updated info from SourceForge:
Quote:
( 2007-02-16 12:34:12 - Project Shell Service ) 2007-02-12: The shell server was taken offline for unscheduled maintenance. Due to a need to replace the old hardware and some unforeseen problems in getting the new hardware setup, we estimate that the shell service may not return until the 21st of February. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Well, dagnabit. Please remember to check the forums for new posts and personal messages; looks like there won't be any notification email going out for another week...

SourceForge almost has everything fixed after the "unscheduled maintenance" on the shell server. I can log in again, the mail sending script works again, but the scheduler (cron) system is still offline...so I'm going to have to log in once a day and send any waiting email. This also means that registrations will be delayed up to 24 hours (although I haven't seen any sign of legitimate registrations in the last few weeks....)
